The history of Fermain Valley Hotel, Guernsey

Nestled in one of the most picturesque parts of Guernsey, Fermain Valley Hotel has a rich and colourful history that blends centuries of intrigue with modern-day luxury.

The main building, originally known as La Favorita, was constructed in the early 20th century as a private residence perched high above Fermain Bay. During the Second World War, the building was used to house German officers during the Occupation, and post-war, it reopened as a hotel.

In 2003, the hotel was transformed by Derek Coates, founder of Healthspan, who restored and redeveloped the site into a boutique destination. His vision brought new life to the hotel, maintaining the charm of the original architecture whilst introducing elegant interiors, manicured gardens, and a series of high-end facilities. It remained under the Coates family, with his son Tim Coates at the helm for several years.

Today, Fermain Valley Hotel is proudly operated by Hand Picked Hotels, known for their collection of carefully curated luxury properties. Under their stewardship, the hotel continues to thrive, offering exceptional service and some of the best hospitality in the Channel Islands.

Notably, it's believed to have been the first house in Guernsey to use electricity, powered by a freshwater stream via a homemade dynamo.

Fermain Bay and its fascinating past

The surrounding Fermain Valley and Bay are steeped in folklore and history:

Believed to be a haunt for pirates and smugglers in the 1300s
Served as a ferry landing point from 1928 to 1996, famous for its makeshift wooden rolling landing stage
Rumoured to be home to ghost stories and hidden wooden harbours under the sand
Site of a dramatic episode during the English Civil War, where jurats were kidnapped by a Royalist captain and later escaped from Castle Cornet

From a grower's cottage to one of Guernsey's most luxurious hotels, Fermain Valley's evolution is a testament to the island's layered past and enduring appeal. With panoramic sea views, a short stroll to the bay, and a deep-rooted sense of place, it continues to enchant guests from near and far.
