The history of Braye Beach Hotel, Alderney

Nestled on the edge of pristine white sands and just steps from the bay's turquoise waters, Braye Beach Hotel continues a remarkable tradition of hospitality spanning over three centuries.

The hotel's origins trace back to the early 1700s when it first welcomed residents and visitors as The Divers Inn. This historic establishment gained particular significance in 1787 when the Reverend John Wesley, founder of the Methodist movement, stayed in what was then called The Jolly Tar. The rest of the hotel was originally a row of fishermen's cottages, where longboats were brought into the distinctive barrel-vaulted basement. Local legend suggests that smuggled goods were discreetly transported from here across the road to nearby warehouses.
Like much of the island, these buildings were severely damaged during the Second World War. In 1952, two new bays with picture windows were added when the hotel was known as The Seaview Hotel, marking the beginning of its transformation into a modern hospitality destination.

Today's Braye Beach Hotel was comprehensively remodelled and refurbished in the 21st century, transforming it into a boutique hotel that seamlessly blends historic charm with contemporary luxury. The hotel's redevelopment was the result of a RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) competition, with the prestigious TP Bennett firm—renowned for over 100 years in architecture and design—appointed to oversee the project.

Now proudly operated by Hand Picked Hotels, known for their collection of carefully curated luxury properties, Braye Beach Hotel maintains its 4-star status whilst offering uncompromising luxury and abundant natural beauty. The hotel's stunning beachfront location and original vaulted fishing stores add to its unique character, creating a magical setting where time stands still.
