Join in National Picnic Week with Hand Picked Hotels
From 15 to 24 of June 2018 Britain will be celebrating National Picnic Week. The week aims to promote the great outdoors and enjoy one of the UK’s most enjoyable summer traditions, which dates back to medieval times. National Picnic Week has grown significantly since it was founded a decade ago. Of course, picnics evolved long before that, in fact it has its roots in 14th century Europe when the elaborate traditions of outdoor feasts were enjoyed by the wealthy upper classes.
It was these medieval hunting feasts and Renaissance era country banquets that laid the foundations of the outdoor eating experience, and some of the main foods that could be found included hams, baked meats and pastries, all of which are popular picnic ingredients today. According to the Oxford English dictionary, the oldest print evidence of the word picnic can be traced back to 1748, but it may have entered the English language from the French word 'piquenique', which first appeared in the1692 edition of Origines de la Langue Franqoise de Ménage.
