We meet Amy and Paul who were married at Wood Hall Hotel & Spa on a gorgeous November day.
The moment we came down the drive and saw Wood Hall sat on top of the hill, we knew it was a special place. As we looked out over the stunning views we instantly fell in love with it. We knew the trees lining the drive, the rolling hills and the beautiful Italian gardens were the perfect ingredients for a wedding in the Yorkshire countryside. The hotel itself is magnificent and each room is beautiful. We attended a wedding showcase so were able to have a good look around and chat with the various members of staff. When we heard we could have exclusive use of the hotel we were sold, as the idea of taking over the entire hotel and having all our family and friends under one roof was exactly what we wanted.
We knew we wanted to get married in Autumn and when we visited Wood Hall for the first time it was the beginning of November so all the trees were beautiful reds and oranges, the leaves were crisp under foot and the fires were being lit; this was our inspiration. We wanted an autumnal theme incorporating the reds, oranges, leaves and foliage. We wanted the room to look cosy so we made sure there were plenty of candles. You never know what the British weather may bring so we were prepared to be stuck inside all day; however it was an absolutely stunning day and we couldn’t have been luckier. Along with our smiles, the sun was beaming, I never thought our guests would need their sunglasses in November. The weather was a true testament to the beautiful location and reaffirmed our reasons for choosing Wood Hall.
All of our suppliers were fantastic and provided us with outstanding service. They listened to what we wanted and helped provide the perfect elements to the perfect day.
Paragon Floral Design: we met Kate at a wedding fair in Manchester and we were instantly drawn to their stand as they were the only florist to have the colours we wanted; everyone else had the usual pinks and whites, but Paragon had a stunning archway made out of leaves and we knew we had to have that at our wedding. Kate listened to exactly what we wanted and we had the most beautiful flowers and centre pieces for our wedding.
Amanda Earl: what this woman can do with sugar is incredible! We met Amanda at her house in Harrogate and tried the best cake I’ve ever tasted (don’t tell my mum that!) Amanda offers an array of flavours and I wanted them all! A few days later Amanda sent us a sketch of the cake and we were blown away. She delivered and assembled the cake on the wedding day and we were stunned by the incredible sugar leaves and flowers she had created. It seemed a shame to cut into it, but I knew how delicious the cake was underneath!
Andrea Bambridge: I never thought I would have a bespoke wedding gown, but after meeting Andrea I knew this was the only way I’d be walking down the aisle. It was fantastic to see the dress be created from start to finish and have input into the finishing touches. There was no pressure to lose weight and force myself to fit into the dress as it was being made to fit me perfectly. I felt amazing when I put that dress on and I was heart broken when I had to take it off. Andrea is incredibly professional and makes the whole wedding dress experience stress-free and very enjoyable.
Sugarbird Photography: I found James online and as soon as I saw his pictures I knew we had to have a chat. James is really down to earth and for someone who hates having their photo taken, he puts you at ease and you forget he’s even there. From the engagement shoot to the big day, James wasn’t pushy or in your face, actually he was like a photography ninja as you didn’t even know he was there half the time. The photos he took of our wedding day our absolutely beautiful; I’m sure everyone thinks that about their wedding photos, but James really captured the essence of the day. He’s creative and original; the only problem we have is which photos to choose from! If I had the wall space I’d have them all!
Harriet Steele: Harriet is an absolute gem! She knows exactly what she’s doing and she’s so down to earth, it’s like your friend is doing your hair and make up. Her prices may be slightly more expensive than some make up artists, but Harriet is worth every penny. She is a calm presence when everyone around you is flapping about and she’s great under pressure. She helped me into my wedding dress when my mum starting panicking about the buttons and she had a pair of pliers at the ready when the heel of my shoe broke just before I headed downstairs! My hair and makeup were immaculate and stayed put all day. I felt beautiful and couldn’t thank Harriet enough.
Kevin Webster, Wood Hall’s event manager was a star! There was nothing he couldn’t do for us. I knew I didn’t have to worry about anything because Kevin had it all in hand. Kevin took care of the flowers, the cake cutting, the decorations; nothing was too much. He explained everything clearly, his master of ceremony duties were perfect and he even liked our Coronation Street themed table plan (especially the Kevin and Sally table). The food was delicious and everyone commented on how good it was. We were impressed by the speed of the food coming out too as we had 100 guests and everyone was on the same course. At some weddings the top table are on their dessert and you’ve only just got your starter, but that certainly wasn’t the case at Wood Hall.
We had one blip, the reservations system wasn’t perfect, some of the guests would call us and say they’d tried to pay for their room but were told there wasn’t a reservation, so this didn’t help my stress levels however Elizabeth was incredibly helpful, she said people could call her directly and she got it all sorted.
The best part of the day was after the ceremony, Paul and I were standing at the top of the aisle and we were facing all our family and friends who were cheering and clapping for us. It felt incredible to have all the people we love in one room; people had literally come from all over the world to celebrate our special day and we were both really touched. I also loved the fact that the dance floor was never empty and we danced the night away with all the people we love.
We had the best day ever and part of that was down to the team at Wood Hall. If you ask me if I would do it all again and would I change anything, my answer would be hell yes and not a thing, it was the best day ever and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
