Industry recognition of the quality of our training, along with the time, resources and level of commitment put in by the managers and trainers show that our commitment to you is genuine.
As a matter of course, we’ll provide you with training in your job role to learn the technical skills required to do your job along with our Hand Picked brand standards and behaviours to ensure you are confident in delivering the level of service our guests expect when they stay in one of our hotels.
Your initial programme is structured to cover both the Hand Picked and hotel induction, Being Hand Picked and job role skills and knowledge based on an assessment of your existing level in these areas.
In addition to this, we offer tailored programmes of development such as:
· Front Office Academies with training on Opera, our Property Management system, enhancing your behaviours to deliver a great guest experience and developing your selling skills.
· Food & Beverage Academies to provide specialised skills and knowledge support in food and wine.
We can also provide you with the opportunity to gain qualifications such as nationally-recognised certificates in Food Hygiene.
If you have a passion for wines and join our team of Wine Champions, you will be able to study for your WSET Intermediate certificate.
To make sure your development is progressing in the way you need, and to give you the chance to discuss your performance throughout the year, each team member receives an annual appraisal. We will make sure you are thoroughly prepared for this to make the most of the conversation with your line manager.
Online Learning Centre
Our Learning Centre is designed for those working in Front Office and the Revenue Office.
We support your technical development with short videos to help you understand how to use Opera, our Property Management and Sales & Catering system.
You can also test your knowledge of IT systems, office procedures and our Brand Standards through self-managed tests.
Hand Picked Trainers
Training is an everyday part of life in Hand Picked Hotels and we are always looking for people with the right approach to support their colleagues in this area.
Formal training qualifications accredited by People 1st are available to Departmental Trainers who will be given the opportunity to achieve their Practical Training Certificate.
For those who carry out our group training in the hotels, such as fire training or customer service, we offer the Group Training Certificate.
Each hotel has Service Champions who support our hotel management team in delivering our award-winning programme Being Hand Picked and group initiatives throughout the year.

Our portfolio contains programmes that cover a broad range of subjects from developing your emotional intelligence to developing a three-year business plan; from interviewing skills to coaching skills.
We have specialist conferences during the year to provide the opportunity for each Team Leader to be updated on group news and developments for their specialist area, be involved in developing the department and receive some personal development. It’s also a great opportunity to meet with peers, network and socialise during the day and over dinner.
We believe in involving our people in our business development. Throughout the year there are working parties in action with team members from a variety of job roles from both the hotels and our support centre in Sevenoaks.
Becoming involved in a project group is a great way to develop new skills and knowledge, challenge the way we work and shape the future of Hand Picked Hotels.
A recent example is meetings etc.
In 2011 we branded our meetings and events proposition and project groups from around the company researched and proposed new standards from everything to how we handle an enquiry, to the style of food to serve and the furniture to use in our meetings and event rooms.
Activity in your Hotel
Of course, we are just as keen that all the team are included in activities at the hotel. You can become involved in a number of ways such as
· Team Member Forum: a communication tool to facilitate two way communication and to allow consultation with the team members.
· Energy and Green Team: developing ideas for our corporate social responsibility and energy management
