The Duke of Edinburgh team of six managers from Hand Picked Hotels, the award-winning collection of 17 architecturally splendid country house hotels, has won The Duke of Edinburgh (the DofE) two-day challenge for the third consecutive year.
The 2012 event, which raised more than £13,500 over a sunny weekend in The Peak District saw 13 teams from across the UK trek through tough terrain over a course of 30 miles. Olympic-style competitions including kayaking and archery also challenged competitors vying for first place.
With an exceptionally fast time and great scores for kayaking, archery and volleyball, Hand Picked Hotels were strong competitors from the start and stole the trophy on the final day. Hand Picked Hotels’ team raised more than £2,000 for the DofE charity. Amey and British Gas put in silver and bronze performances respectively, taking second and third place. Mark Clayton, DofE Team Captain and General Manager of Crathorne Hall Hotel, near Yarm, North Yorkshire, said: “This year was exceptionally tough with each and every member of the team running almost the whole time on both days. The point scoring system has changed, so it was much closer on the final day, but we all gave it 200% and are delighted to have retained our crown.”
This month also saw Hand Picked Hotels win the coveted AA Large Hotel Group of the Year 2012-2013 in recognition of consistently high quality of service, hospitality and guest experience. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is the UK’s leading youth charity, raising the aspirations of young people and developing them for life and work so they can fulfill their potential and have a brighter future.
