Hedgehog Relocation

Crathorne Hall Hotels’ community and environmental links were extended when they took delivery of two hedgehogs from a wildlife rescue centre.  The hedgehogs were part of a relocation program from the Isle of Uist.

Hedgehogs are not a native species to the island and were introduced by a gardener in 1974 to control slugs and snails.  Hedgehogs spread across the island reaching an estimated 5000 in number.  The ecological balance of the island was upset when the eggs of an internationally important bird colony became under threat of being eaten by the hedgehogs.  A plan was put in place to trap and kill the hedgehogs however this has been replaced with a relocation program.

Crathorne were delighted to be accepted as a release site.  On Thursday 26th April Joanna McGowan, Manager at Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue Centre brought two hedgehogs which were released into a wooded area of the grounds.  Such is the suitability of the grounds more releases are being planned for the coming months.
